You may be asking, "What is an app, what can an app do for my rink business?"
 
In 2008, I was fortunate to be upgraded to first class on a flight seated next to a dead heading pilot in uniform. He looked at the cover of my Wired magazine and asked, "What does that mean? 'Is the Web dead?'"
 
I proceeded to summarize the article for him. Wired magazine has been very successful in predicting the future of technology since the magazine's birth in the 90's. What the article predicted was that our society would decrease our use of the web to interact with the Internet. It predicted the use of apps instead of browsers on desktops and mobile devices. You may ask, but how can I use an App in my rink business?
 
Aside from all the normal information that we deliver electronically to your potential rink customers such as location, hours of operation, we can do something else with an app, interact with our customers. An app takes a place on the user's device, it has abilities that a mobile website, mobile responsive site cannot offer, direct notifications. Messages that the user has agreed to receive that show up as notifications on their device. These can be delivered within a geographical area, inside your rink, to a particular zip code, to users who have selected a particular topic such as coupons.

When I started in the tech business in 1999, I was selling websites. I was asked the same question, "Why do I need one." History and trends showed them why. Rinks are not normally in competition with each other in this day and age, they are in competition with other entertainment options. Be an early adopter; get in front of the trend.
 
I also wish to develop further ideas and features on how to utilize an app for a skating rink. Implement these ideas and make them available to other users with real feedback on their success in different markets. What works for one can work for another or be the seed of an idea for another. It is my intent to maintain a mailing list and ultimately a forum on utilizing an app in skating centers.
 
I love skating. I've been involved my whole life in every capacity; rink rat, athlete, employee in many capacities. I want to profit from my experience by economies of scale, not by selling 10 apps but by selling 100 and grow the market and profitability of rinks to bring them back from the brink.
